And we’re off. A bright, but cold evening in Corkagh Park saw the launch of Monday Night Racing 2023.
In the U8s it was Jaxon Jennings to the fore in the TT, setting a blistering 2.10 in the TT and unbeatable in the elimination, while in the U10s, Ben Cunningham rode a TT time (1.48) that would have put him high up the leaderboard in the U12s, and won the elimination but TJ put it up to him with a fine effort. Donagh Cassels took a fine win in the road race, holding off his brother Eoin and Bobby Campbell to take the spoils.
On to the older kids, and in U12s, it was great to see James Godfrey back after his travels. He hasn’t been on the bike much, but the talent is still there! Mossy (1.46), Xander (1.45) and James (1.44) were the pick of the TTs. Daria rode a crafty elimination to stay in for fourth, while James took the win from Xander.
In the U14s, Ysabella rode an excellent 1.37 while Daithi’s 1.34 just held off Orann and Fionn by a second. Did Fionn’s dirt-encrusted cycling shoes cost him a second? We’ll never know …
The U16s rode hot laps, 1.28 for Ryan and 1.27 for Jack. And sure enough, the elimination race came down to a sprint between the two of them and despite a brief interaction with the grass verge, it was Ryan who won a close contest.
The handicap spreadsheet will get a few tweaks next week as the groups failed to converge for the most part, but it worked in favour of the limit group, with William outsprinting Remy and Daria for second, but there was no denying James Cunningham who attacked his group at the flag drop and built an unassailable lead, road through the group in front of them and won in style.
