Access to Orwell Wheelers on RWGPS (2022)

After consulting with some of the usual suspects, I've created a new category on the forum for club spins. This will be the go-to place if you're looking to get out during the week and want to see if anyone else is up for it too. It's a regular enough question into the Orwell inbox, so I wanted to create one place where people can keep an eye out.
Things to include in your post
- meeting point - venue and time
- rough pace
- spin length, both distance and time - describe or link to the route if you have one in mind
- If there'll be a coffee stop or not
Subscribing
If you're interested in getting notifications of when people post here, you can subscribe to the forum to get emails. (You can do this in any forum.) Just go to the forum: www.orwellwheelers.org/forum/spins and click subscribe at the top or bottom of the list of topics:

The benefits of this include
- a calendar of club spins (and other events)
- a library of routes
- ride maps including full turn by turn directions
To take full advantage of these benefits Orwell members must have a personal account. on Ride With GPS (RWGPS). Personal RWGPS accounts are free.
RWGPS can be accessed using a browser or via (free) iPhones or Android apps.
For a number of weeks, several club members have been beta testing the new account and offering feedback. The plan is to roll this out to everyone prior to the start of the Winter spins.
The club account will allow you to:
- Access Orwell spin routes at any time in a central location
- Ability to search/filter routes by distance and/or elevation
- Downloadable GPS files in a range of formats
- Direct write of GPX or TCX files to cycle computers (Garmin or Wahoo models less than 5 years old)
- Customization of advance distance warning of turns
- The ability to print detailed cue sheets
- The ability to print out maps, and maps for each turn
- Full routing and warnings for club members using the Ride With GPS app
Hope to have a full set of step by step setup instructions when we make this available to all club members.

Orwell Wheelers Ride with GPS Club Account
The purpose of the Orwell club account with RWGPS is to facilitate planning and communication around club rides/spins.
For the Winter Spins it will replace the spreadsheet that was posted to the club website.
(The spreadsheet was inconvenient for all, and frequently fell out of date).
This is a major step forward in route planning and provides additional “premium” features for Orwell members.
Access to the Orwell Club section on RWGPS is for current club members only.
RWGPS will be used to:
- Provide GPS services and support for club members on club rides
- Provide an efficient way for the spin committee to add/change/delete/review Club Routes
- Provide additional value to paid club members that is not available to non-members
RWGPS will be used along with the Orwell Wheelers forum. It is not a replacement for the forum or other existing communications channels.
The Events calendar on RWGPS will convey information about club spins including:
Route (downloadable), coffee stop options, leaders & minders etc.
A library of Orwell spin routes will be maintained on RWGPS by the spin committee.
These can be accessed by any Orwell member at any time.
Orwell members who download route for the club site on RWWPGS can avail of full turn-by-turn directions and customisable turn warnings.
(These features are normally available to premium RWGPS members only).
The spin subcommittee will create RWGPS calendar events for club spins (and potentially other events).
All active club members can get access to premium navigation features on all club routes and events:
- Offline Maps in our mobile app
- PDF Maps + Cuesheets
- Advanced Turn Notifications with TCX files
- Estimated time
- Club Account Member Benefits Page
All route and member managers have access to features only found on the Club Account:
- Advanced Route Planning Feature
- Route Changelog with edit history
- Club Account Route Backups
- RWGPS Member list filtering & sorting
- Added ability to add routes to events with filtering and sorting options
- Add Club logo to PDF Map and Cuesheet
- Club Account Manager Page

For now (September 2019) these are visible to all.
When this is up and running it will be restricted to club members only.

Each has its own advantages and disadvantages.
At this point the objective is to let people know that the premium features afforded by RWGPS will only be available to club members.
(As the club is generously covering the cost - it is only fair that only club members can avail of the advantages).
It does not make sense to run the validation exercise until after membership renewal takes place. At that point I will select the most pragmatic, low touch option.

Great stuff with RWGPS, thanks for you all your research and design ideas to benefit all the members of the club. It will be a fantastic resource for the club when fully up and running. Mapping, messaging, planning with an open to members calendar, all in one place! fantastic.
Kind regards
Val.

This may be useful at the Bank Holiday weekend for people who cannot make the trip to Portlaoise.
For now the Route Library can be accessed without logging into RWGPS via
Route Library . After Christmas we will be restricting this premium service to Orwell members logged into RWGPS.
There is a separate post on how to access the Orwell Club section on RWGPS.

There are about 50 routes in the library as of Oct 2019. 28 of these are between 50km and 90km long.
Update: As of Jun 2020 the library contains more than 100 routes.
If you access the library you can sort or filter routes by any combination of
- Distance
- Elevation (climb)
- Tag (Hilly or Flat)
- Route Name (start-dist-elev-coffee)
You can click on a route to see more detail (and load the route to a bike computer)
The route descriptions list the main waypoints and have suggested coffee stops.
They also contain some information on shortening the route should this be necessary.
More routes will be added between now and year end for use on Winter spins in 2020.
Safe cycling!
Ian, Joe & Tara
A video showing how to use the Route Library was posted on the Leisure WhatsApp groups on 24Jun2020. It was too large to post to the forum

Club members can pin their club routes for quick access on the ELEMNT. This can be done on the website or the app, and means club members will always have easy access to club route navigation. Pinning Routes on the Ride with GPS Website To pin a route on the Ride with GPS website: Click PIN in the left panel of the route. | |
Pinning Routes on the Ride with GPS App To pin a route on the Ride with GPS app, select your desired route from your route list in the app. Tap the icon in the upper left corner of the route to bring up the route options menu. Tap pin this to pin the route. |
Each time you pin routes, you will have to sync your ELEMNT. The ELEMNT route library does not sync with Ride with GPS automatically, so if you do not sync newly pinned routes, they will not appear.
