In the absence of any previous report, I believe it would do this wonderful sportive a great disservice not to share the experience and highly recommend it for any budding cyclists bucket-list. Besides, it seemed like many like-minded competitors had similar plans, proudly representing Orwell, adding friendly faces to club kit.

Kenmare hosted the starting point, embracing the tourists with a well marshalled registration area, cordoned-off main street and coloured flags to add to the carnival atmosphere. The 140Km route offered spectacular views along the Beara Peninsula, following the Wild Atlantic Way. Sunshine and clear skies added to the occasion and many photo opportunities for the true leisure cyclist!!

Heading south hitting Ardgroom and some refreshment, the unspoilt, rugged route continued around Eyeries to Allihies providing challenging climbing and a timely reminder of the distance to go. Returning north to Castletownbere again offered a warm welcome and a taste of anticipation for finishing line celebrations. The road to Glengarriff slightly dimmed this anticipation as the distance began to take its toll and the looming Caha Pass. The presence of 3000 cyclists around this route offered good humour and sparing draft to weary legs, with a drummers beat willing all to the summit. A fantastic decent towards Kenmare was truly memorable, adding to the already observed quality of road surface (....mostly!!!) on much of the route.

A bling finisher's medal awaited in Kenmare, nicely accompanied by music, pasta and a protein shake. The celebration did indeed last long into the night, highlighting some fine bars and restaurants, and a strong intention to return.
