McNally's Sonny Cullen

Sonny Cullen Memorial IVCA handicap, Batterstown, Sunday 23 August

Stephen McNally showed the importance of always sprinting for the line as he took another hard fought win in the prestigious Sonny Cullen Memorial IVCA handicap race at Batterstown on Sunday 23 August.

McNally headed a small group that emerged in the late stages from the large bunch of scratch riders and the accumulated group of riders from the groups ahead to take the honours in the popular 80km event centred on the Green Sheds course.

After jumping across to a small group on the final drag up to Warrenstown, McNally and co mopped up the remaining riders and sprinted for the line unsure of whether all the riders ahead had been accounted for.

The Dunboyne-based Vet checked the results afterwards more in hope than expectation and was delighted to be told that his finishing surge had been enough to secure the unique and prestigious trophy.
