We've been remiss in our results round-up since the Rás na mBan, and it's time to play catch-up! Along with a host of medals for Orla Hendron and Fionn and Naoise Sheridan at the track champs, the Laragh Classic saw a great result for Liam Rowsome, and Brian McNally placed in the A4 edition, and the Leinster Champs. Before that, the Hammond TT saw Gavin Dodd, Jules Cantwell and Fionn Sheridan all take home prizes!

The Hammond Memorial time trials took place on 14th September, with the road race that has been used in recent years being ditched in favour of an undulating test. With riders facing 32.5km around the hills of Wicklow, the format was appropriate for a trophy which was originally awarded for a 50 mile time trial.

Eoin Morton (UCD) was the fastest man on the day, demonstrating his continuing flying form. He won the Noel Hammond Memorial event in a blistering time of 48'57", just half a second ahead of Kilcullen's John Lynch. With just that fraction of second separating the top two, the podium was rounded out by Donal Walsh (Slaney) a minute down in 49'58".

UCD made it a double, with Gavin Heberlin taking the A3 Kieran Hammond Memorial for the club, with the times separating gold from silver again being quite tight - only two seconds in this case. With 51'47" for Heberlin, second went to Odhran O'Coillte of Bray Wheelers, who completed the course in 51'49".

In the bronze position was Orwell's first placer, Gavin Dodd, two minutes down, but still blazing around with an average spped of 36.3kmph for 53'44". The occasion marked Dodd's début on his new TT rig, and after placing third in the 2013 Orwell League behind two A1 riders, we expect the new machine will help him to further success in the 2014 season.

In the A4 race, Orwell took two of the podium spots, behind McNally Swords CC's Paul Doherty. Jules Cantwell, who has seen much success in the Orwell League this year, was second with 57'30", though his preparation was interrupted by work commitments and illness. Cantwell was a regular placer in the club league TTs, winning the opening round outright from Limit, and classed the Hammond event as a "below par performance", and is already hoping the event will be run next year so he can properly target it.

Junior track star Fionn Sheridan earned third place in the Hammond A4 event, only one of several medals he collected this month. The Leinster Track Champs were run on Saturday 21st in Sundrive Road. The competitors were blessed with the weather, and the sunshine helped Sheridan to collect the 500TT bronze and Scratch silver in the Junior Men category.

Orla Hendron completed the exact same feat for the Senior Women, picking up 500TT bronze and Scratch silver - a very encouraging result ahead of the World Masters Champs next month.

The other members of the Sheridan clan also acquitted themselves very decently, with Uisneach Sheridan earning 4th in both the 500TT and Scratch U12 races, just outside the medals, while sister Naoise Sheridan won the U16 Women Scratch race to take home the only Orwell gold of the day! Not satisfied with that, she also collected silver for the U16 Women 500TT. That caps a very successful season for each of the Sheridans, who have merited countless mentions on these pages.

Orwell medallists at the track champs

Returning to the road, the previous weekend saw the running of the inaugural Friends First Laragh Classic race, organised by St Tiernan's. With stormy conditions, a tough course was made even tougher, and the hard road men Liam Rowsome and Brian McNally were the beneficiaries. Rowsome described the parcours as "a poorly surfaced road which was either up or down, and the only short part that seemed flat was into a block headwind".

A gruelling selection followed on the long climb at the start of the race, and more riders were shelled on each lap. In the A3 race, Rowsome missed the decisive break of four, but attacked on the final lap to pass one of its members and claim 4th for himself. It's the result the tester has been waiting for, to add to his league winnings.

Meanwhile in the A4 affair, McNally was battling it out behind the solo winning break, finally netting 8th for his efforts. He improved on that last weekend in Dunlavin, taking 7th in the Leinster Champs. Unfortunately, given his steady rate of improvement, the season is pretty much over, but we've made the calculation, and reckon he'll be winning his first race in early April 2014!

Anne Dalton was also in action after her Rás na mBan retirement, and secured 5th for DID Electrical, despite the uphill finish not playing to her strengths.

With that, the season is nearly at a complete close, and cycle-cross will be taking over for the winter. We'll keep you posted as always, thanks for reading, and enjoy whatever winter break you take!
