In yet another successful weekend for club riders, Ronan Grimes took outright victory in the A4 race at Donore yesterday, earning himself an A3 upgrade. Joining him in A3 will be John Lanigan, who netted fifth in the same race. Charlotte MacDonald also placed fifth in the women's race, adding to her Corkagh Park result. Diarmuid Collins picked up the top A2 prize in the title event, while on Saturday Wexford natives Jamie Busher and Patrick O'Brien both earned bronze medals in their county champs.

There was delight for Ronan Grimes in Donore yesterday, as he earned his A3 upgrade with an excellent win in the A4 race. No breaks were allowed to get away during the day, but Grimes broke late, jumping away solo at the 2km mark. He then TTed into the wind up the final drag, only barely managing to stay ahead of the bunch gallop to the line, but doing enough to earn a well-deserved win.

That win is worth eight points, pushing Grimes well past the amount needed for his A3 upgrade. Added to his 4th place in the Donamon Dynamos GP in June, and 6th in March at the Loughrea GP, he's temporarily the highest ranked A4 rider after those who picked up points in the Omagh 3 Day. He's also been putting in strong showings in the club league, most recently on last Thursday when he took second after working in the break.

John Lanigan was racing in the same A4 event in Donore, but resisted his natural Orwellian urge to chase down Grimes in the closing stages. Instead he smartly sat in, and then sprinted to fifth place behind his winning clubmate. That's two results from two races for Lanigan, after taking a superb second in last weekend's Seamus Kennedy Memorial. He also has the points for an A3 licence, and given his 100% record so far this season, we'll be expecting further results shortly!

In the title event, the Brendan Campbell Memorial, Diarmuid Collins romped home in one of the front groups to take the top A2 prize. Collins clearly has form at present, and he's another we'll be expecting big things from this weekend, at the Suir Valley 3 Day.

Donore was also host to the final round of the Joe Daly Cycle’s Women’s National League, featuring a strong Orwell presence as always. Charlotte MacDonald kept her winning form to take a great fifth place, adding to her points from last week's TT, and another result to her second place in Corkagh Park on Tuesday.

Anne Dalton (DID Electrical) is likewise in the middle of a purple patch. An Orwell rider until she was head-hunted for the DID squad this season, she took the win in Corkagh Park and was the overall league leader heading into yesterday's race. She broke away from the bunch with 2km to go yesterday and came home second, more than enough to retain the overall lead, and indeed extending her gap over the rest of the league. Congratulations to her, winner of the 2013 Joe Daly Cycle’s Women’s National League!

The last set of results belong to two of the club's Wexford contingent, who made the journey home for the Wexford County Championships on Saturday. Patrick O'Brien rode an aggressive race, attacking constantly and getting into four strong moves, but ultimately each was reeled back in. Coming to the final kilometres, he used his tired legs to help Jamie Busher get into a decent position for the finish. Four men broke away at the bottom of the last drag to take the top spots, but Busher launched himself into the sprint to take the A4 bronze medal. O'Brien also did enough to secure the A2 bronze, a just reward for his efforts.
