Thomas crowned in Kilbride

Brittas, Co. Dublin, 2 July 2009

Graham Thomas won the Orwell Club Road Race Championship in fine style at Kilbride last Thursday, just edging Myles Kirby in a mini epic around the lakes near Blessington.

Thomas and Kirby were part of a multi-club group of approximately 12 riders that fought out the prizes as the Inter-Club League racers chased the trophies for their individual club championships. Thomas held off Kirby by the narrowest of margins while just behind them Ódhran Connors beat John Dillon for third place.

The race was held on a demanding course that took in two circuits around Poulaphouca before heading over the relentless series of rolling hills towards Lacken before joining the familiar mini lakes circuit for a lap, finishing at the top of the Oldcourt drag.

In the youth race promoted by Orwell alongside the senior championships, Craig Arrigan led in Darragh Long with Rachael Mellor sixth ahead of Brian O'Shea Scanlon, Timothy Mellor and Gary Byrne.
