There are a lot of events in the week ahead but the most important on on the Scott Orwell Wheeler calendar is the Stephen Roche GP.  This event is Ireland's most prestigious criterium race, running annually since 1988. The challenging but spectator-friendly circuit invariably produces great racing action for the crowd lining the roadsides and congregated in the central green area. The 1.3km loop is located in the housing estate where no less than three of the Roche family took their first tentative pedal strokes on the road to Tour de France glory.

Established as one of the 'must do' events on the Leinster racing calendar, the Roche Grand Prix traditionally boasts a who's who of Irish road racing talent with the top short circuit racers in the country doing battle for one of local racing's most prestigious trophies.

Past winners include professional cyclist and Orwell Wheelers member Nicolas Roche in 2008. Son of Stephen Roche, Nicolas' palmarès include both the Irish National Road and Time Trial Championships, as well as a stage of the Vuelta a España,  currently riding for Team BMC

LEISURE:

After the busy few weeks of the Mount Leinster, the Ring of Beara, the Tour de Connemara and the Wicklow 100/200 things are a little quieter this weekend but there are still PLENTY of options. The Cycling Ireland website is a great source of information - CI Leisure Events

Saturday the 16th:
The June Saturday Leisure Spins start this week and will leave Joe Daly Cycles at 8.30am. There are routes on the forum for each colour group and the dispatcher for June is Conor Cosgrave. Check out Leonards post on the club forum for the routes - https://www.orwellwheelers.org/forum/8-miscellaneous-club-chatter/6849-june-saturday-leisure-spins#26843

If you want to head away from Dublin and take in a Sportive then the Tour de Burren seems to be the main event today. Always scenic....not always dry;)

Sunday the 17th:
Loads of options today - some of the ones which stand out are -
The McNally Swords Two County Challenge around north county Dublin. Nice and local and flat.
The Tour of the Lakes hosted by Lakeside Wheelers in Mullingar - flat, fast and the odd lake to be seen.
The Tour of the Galtees will satisfy any climbing urges!
Ox Mountain Sportive, 4 passes in Connaught - another one for the climbers
Bangor Coastal Challenge for a trip to the north. It takes in a lot of the Giants Causeway Coast Sportive route.

Sunday the 24th of June:

This is another big one for the club as it is an event close to our hearts which has been running for many years and which has raised a lot of money for a local charity - The Joe Daly Memorial Charity Cycle Rally.

If you fancy a nice leisurely, social spin on a Sunday morning - out to Enniskerry and back then this is for you. Organised by the Tansey family and marshaled on bikes by club members. The route takes us from Dundrum out to the Texaco petrol station in Enniskerry and back with a refreshment shop at the turning point. Many members will support the event and extend their spin afterwards.

Sign-on will be from 09:00. The fee is €10 for riders over 14 years old. It's €5 for riders under 14. There are sponsorship cards available from Joe Daly Cycles.

All proceeds go to Simpson's Hospital, Dundrum. Click on the link for some information on Simpson's Hospital - Simpson's Hospital Dundrum

There will be a Draw for all participants at the end of the Rally.
