One of the new initiatives launched was the Leisure Challenges.
We think there is a challenge in here to suit everyone!
The Challenges comprise 3 optional personal challenges that can help
to provide focus and recognition for your 2017 cycling efforts.
The Distance Challenge:
Between April and August inclusive, i.e. 20 weeks .............
Option 1 - Cycle 7 Milan-San Remo (equivalents) i.e. 2,100 km
(avg. 105 km pw x 20 weeks);
Option 2 - Cycle 12 Milan-San Remo (equivalents) i.e. 3,600 km
(avg. 180 km pw x 20 weeks);
Option 3 - Cycle 16 Milan-San Remo (equivalents) i.e. 4,800 km
(avg. 240 km pw x 20 weeks).
The Climbing Challenge:
Between April and August inclusive, i.e. 20 weeks .............
Option 1 - Climb 20 Alpe d'Huez (equivalents) i.e. 22,000 metres
(avg. 1,100 metres pw x 20 weeks);
Option 2 - Climb 30 Alpe d'Huez (equivalents) i.e. 33,000 metres
(avg. 1,650 metres pw x 20 weeks);
Option 3 - Climb 40 Alpe d'Huez (equivalents) i.e. 44,000 metres
(avg. 2,200 metres pw x 20 weeks).
The Randonneur Challenge:
Between March and August inclusive, i.e. 6 months .............
Complete 12 x 140km spins
Any spin completed in 1 day counts.
Breaking it down:
April to August inclusive comprises 22 weeks.
We have assumed 2 weeks of no cycling during holidays.
Thus 20 weeks has been used as a standard for the averages mentioned.
How it works:
Sign-up electronically using the "Sign-up Forms" section of the website.
The deadline for signing up is 31 March.
You can commit to one challenge or if you wish more than one.
During April the Challenge table is published identifying which challenge(s) have been joined and by whom.
This is when your commitment to your challenge(s) becomes public.
Once a month log your progress for the preceding month.
A new form to allow you do so electronically will be available on the website.
The deadline for logging your progress is the first 2 weeks of each month.
The first deadline will be 14 May for logging your April progress and so on.
During each successive month the Challenge table is updated to incorporate your prior month progress as logged by you.
The boring stuff:
An honour system is used, i.e. self-report your progress.
Ideally use Strava to track your progress but manual is ok too though only for distance.
Turbo and spin class miles are great but must be excluded for these challenges.
Meeting the deadlines outlined above is a requirement for participation.
Don't worry - there will be plenty of deadline reminders.
Lastly for general questions please reach out on this thread or if you have any specific questions feel free to mail: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
Have fun and the best of luck.

Many have decided to take on even more than one challenge.
Fair play to each rider for making such a commitment.
The current breakdown is as follows:
1. 61 riders have joined a Distance Challenge (commences 01 April).
2. 57 riders have joined a Climbing Challenge (commences 01 April).
3. 36 riders have joined the Randonneur Challenge (commenced 01 March).
Remember, the closing date to join a challenge is Friday 31 March.
Check out the "Leisure Challenges" form in the Sign-up Forms section of the website.

just wondering do I have to sign up for one of these challenges starting in April in order to go out with the club for spins. Basically I would go out on a sat or sun most weekends but not interested in doing one of those challenges?
thanks,
Michael.

The spins are independent to the challenges. So no requirement to sign up.

A quick update on the Leisure Challenges .......
In the end 104 riders decided to take on a Leisure Challenge with many joining more than one.
Fair play to one and all.
- 87 riders have joined a Distance challenge;
- 79 riders a Climbing challenge;
- 45 riders joined the Randonneur Challenge.
The window to sign-up closed last week.
During the course of the next week or so we'll publish a table identifying the different challenges joined and by whom.
In addition we'll get a new form up on the site to enable self-logging of April's progress.
Note - the form should also be used to log Randonneur spins completed during March.
Thanks

Here is an update on the Leisure Challenges ......
On the homepage side bar you will find 2 new items (see 1 & 2 below) appearing under the "Leisure Challenges" section - thanks to Luke for putting them up.
1.
Track Progress file:
This file identifies who has joined a challenge(s) and which one.
There is 1 sheet for each of the 3 challenges i.e. Distance, Climbing and Randonneur.
Over time this table will reflect your progress as logged by you using the form mentioned at bullet 2.
It will also calculate what proportion of your challenge is complete and what element remains outstanding.
2.
Ongoing - Log Progress.
Use this electronic form to log your progress once a month for the previous month.
E.g. in May log your progress for April; in June log your May progress etc.
All going well the table identified at 1 will update automatically.
Some reminders:
- When using the "Log Progress" form please Capitalise the first letter of your name and surname. This makes it easier for the form to "find you" and to update the Progress file table successfully.
- The deadline for logging progress for the previous month is the 1st 2 weeks of the succeeding month.
- The Randonneur Challenge began in March (unlike the Distance and Climbing who began in April) and so March Randonneur spins can be logged from now up to 15 May.
- Only log progress for a Challenge you have joined as this is the only progress that is displayed.
- You can log progress using a smartphone, tablet, laptop, PC etc.
- Remember to exclude Turbo miles:)
- As mentioned, all going well, the "Track Progress" file will automatically update when you log your progress i.e. assuming name information is correct.
Nevertheless I'll keep an eye on the data and provide an update periodically.
- If you spot any errors or have any questions at all please post here or mail me at: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
Lots of luck to everyone with their particular challenge.

A reminder to update your Challenges progress before the 15th May deadline.
Check out the files section of the website.
Use the ....
-
1. Log progress form to log your progress using your laptop, phone etc;
2. Use the Track Progress file to check out the bigger picture.
Please ensure to enter values only i.e no need to type "km" or "m" etc.
If your progress does not update automatically, please reach out on this thread.
The best of luck with your challenges.
