Introduction to Racing Sessions

Following on from Stephen’s very successful session last September, we’re going to be running two more Introduction to Racing sessions during February for club members who’re considering getting into the competitive side of things. They’ll be on the bike sessions and the plan is to mix instruction with practice drills and mock races on the road.
The first, “Introduction to Club League Racing”, will take place in Corkagh Park on Saturday February 7 at 11am and will focus on bike handling and bunch riding during a race. We’ll then look at some basic race tactics, as well as explaining the different race formats used in the club league. For those of you completely new to scene, the club league is a series of races for Orwell Members on Thursday evenings during the spring and summer months. The league is one of the best routes into racing. The races are run on quiet circuits, involve smaller bunches and it gives newcomers a chance to find their feet in a less intimidating environment.
The second session, “Introduction to Open Racing”, will take place in Black Bull on Saturday February 14 at 11am and will be run on the roads around Batterstown and Dunsany. This one will be more focused on preparing people to making the leap into A4 racing and we’ll take a look at how the dynamic of an open race can differ from club races. We’ll talk about riding in large bunches, attacking, establishing breaks and bridging. We’ll also focus a lot on team work and how Orwell riders can work together to get a result for the club. If you’re in Dave McLoughlin’s A4 mentoring group, this session will (hopefully) complement the work he’s doing with you.
The sessions will be open to any Orwell member with a 2015 Cycling Ireland licence. Both events are pitched at total beginner level, but anyone who’s already raced a bit is also more than welcome to come along. Even if you’re unsure about whether you want to race or not, feel free to come and see what it’s all about.
Some of the bike drills will be run at race pace or near to race pace. Don’t worry about being able to hold the pace. It’s inevitable at this time of year that we’ll have different fitness levels and we’ll regroup after each drill if things break up a little.
Meeting points:
The Corkagh Park session will take place at the cycle race track in the park . The entrance is next to the camping site.
The open racing session will meet at the usual club league meeting point at Black Bull ( here ). For those of who haven’t been there before, it’s on the little side road off the Trim Road just after the Black Bull roundabout. It’s about half a kilometer down, where the road widens and people can park their cars. I’d suggest the group meets in the Phoenix Park and cycles out.
If you’re interested in attending, let me know below, so we can get an idea of numbers.

And for research purposes you can have a read of a few articles under the League menu - third link from the right near the top of the page. That'll give you some background and starting knowledge, and if you need any further explanations, you can ask tomorrow.
